The Word
The 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP27 – builds on the outcomes of COP26 to deliver action on an array of issues critical to tackling the climate emergency – from urgently reducing greenhouse gas emissions, building resilience, and adapting to the inevitable impacts of climate change, to delivering on the commitments to finance climate action in developing countries.
In China
In the context of global climate warming and energy security, China has set a double-carbon strategy(China plans to reach peak carbon use by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2060)and low-carbon energy transition.China's internal combustion engine will show diversified development in the future . It is divided into three stages: diversification, low carbon and zero carbon. For the internal combustion engine industry, we need to accept and embrace this trend. It will take decades of efforts and evolution to achieve the goal of zero carbon. Currently, there are three points of consensus: due to the great differences in the level of economic development, relevant technologies and supporting industries, the internal combustion engine will still have a long lifetime; Diversification of power and energy is an inevitable trend. Hydrogen engine is an effective way to realize dual carbon strategy.
China's internal combustion engines consume 60% of oil and emit nearly one-tenth of its carbon emissions each year. At the same time, new energy vehicles are mushrooming under the double carbon strategy, which brings great challenges to the traditional fuel vehicles, especially the internal combustion engine. It is expected that in the low-carbon stage to 2025, the thermal efficiency of diesel engine can reach 55%, achieving fuel saving and carbon reduction of 16%; The thermal efficiency of the gas engine can reach 45%, and the carbon reduction of 9% can be realized. Zero-carbon, carbon-neutral fuel with hydrogen as the core is expected to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Chinese companies have also taken active action, with FAW Power successfully firing both heavy and light hydrogen combustion engines in June this year. Many domestic and foreign internal combustion engine industries have successfully researched and developed hydrogen internal combustion engine,for the main structure of hydrogen internal combustion engine is the same as that of traditional internal combustion engine, there is no need to rebuild the industrial chain, so the development prospect of hydrogen internal combustion engine is promising. Great Wall Motor's Jing Hui said that Great Wall's customers' interest in traditional electric vehicles is shifting to hybrids and beyond pure electric vehicles. Zhang Sanjie, chairman of Zichai Power Co., LTD., said that at present, the ship's power is still mainly internal combustion engine. Because the ship's endurance is longer, the ship's power form is less except individual natural gas fuel engines.
As the world's leading engine manufacturer, Cummins has set a goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050
"It is our shared responsibility to our communities and our industries to improve the health of our planet and to make life better for all." Tom Linebarger, chairman and chief executive of Cummins. "Government, industry, NGO and the community must come together and act decisively and quickly to address the environmental threats we face."
Cummins' PLANET 2050 strategy has three core areas: tackling climate change and atmospheric emissions; Sustainable and optimal use of natural resources; Improve the community environment. The strategy includes eight targets for 2030 and an expected target by 2050. This is the most comprehensive and highest standards of environmental sustainability strategy Cummins has ever published.
The following are the specific goals the Company plans to achieve by 2030 with respect to its components, products, production sites and network of operations:
Cummins will take active measures to address climate change and atmospheric emissions;
50% reduction in absolute greenhouse gas emissions from production sites and operating outlets (science-based target);
25 per cent reduction in absolute life-cycle GHG emissions from newly sold products (science-based target);
Working with customers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from products in use by 55 million metric tons;
Reduce VOC emissions from painting and coating operations by 50%;
Use natural resources in a sustainable and optimal way;
Customizing recyclable life cycle solutions for each component to achieve lower consumption and more efficient recycling;
25% reduction in the percentage of operating revenue generated by waste from production sites and operations;
Recycling 100% plastic packaging, eliminate the use of disposable plastic products in dining places, office facilities, activities;
Production bases and operating outlets reduce absolute water consumption by 30%;
